Laser Hair Removal Before & Aftercare: Everything You Need to Know
Thinking about starting your laser hair removal journey? Knowing what to do before and after your appointment can help you get the best from your treatment while keeping your skin feeling comfortable and cared for.
At Luxe Laser Lounge & Boutique in St Neots, we want you to feel completely confident before you even step through the door. So, here’s our simple guide to preparing for your laser hair removal appointment and looking after your skin afterwards.
Before Your Laser Hair Removal Appointment
Shave the Treatment Area
You will always need to shave the area within 24 hours of being treated before your appointment. Shaving removes the hair above the skin while leaving the hair follicle intact, allowing the laser to target it effectively.
You must not wax, pluck or epilate the area between laser appointments, as these methods remove the hair from the follicle.
If you’re unsure when you should shave, just ask us before your appointment and we’ll advise you.
Avoid Tanning
It’s important to follow the tanning and sun-exposure advice provided during your consultation.
This includes natural tanning as well as artificial tanning products. Always let us know about any recent sun exposure or changes to your skin before treatment. Got a holiday booked? No problem! Just make sure you let us know in advance as we will need to leave a gap of 4 weeks before and after all laser hair removal treatment.
Keep Your Skin Product-Free
On the day of your appointment, arrive with clean skin in the treatment area wherever possible.
Avoid applying products such as moisturiser, oils, perfume or deodorant to the area being treated unless you’ve been advised otherwise.
Tell Us About Any Changes
Your safety always comes first.
Please let us know if anything has changed since your consultation, including medication, health changes, recent tanning, skin irritation or new products you’re using.
We would always rather you ask a question than worry about it!
What Happens After Laser Hair Removal?
Everyone’s skin responds differently, but some temporary warmth, sensitivity or redness around the treatment area can occur after a laser session.
We’ll provide appropriate aftercare advice based on your treatment and your skin.
Looking After Your Skin After Treatment
Be Gentle With Your Skin
Your skin deserves a little TLC following your appointment.
Avoid anything that could unnecessarily irritate the treated area and follow the personalised aftercare instructions we give you.
Avoid Picking or Scratching
As tempting as it can sometimes be, leave the treated area alone and allow your skin to settle naturally.
Follow Sun-Exposure Advice
Protecting treated skin from unnecessary sun exposure is an important part of laser aftercare. Follow the guidance given at your appointment and use suitable sun protection where appropriate. Ensure you don’t have any holidays booked for at least 4 weeks after laser hair removal treatment.
What About Hair Between Appointments?
One of the most important things to remember during a course of laser hair removal is to avoid waxing, plucking and epilating the treatment area.
If you need to remove visible hair between appointments, shaving is the only method used during a laser course, subject to the advice given by your practitioner.
Why Are Several Laser Sessions Needed?
Hair grows in different stages, and laser treatment is designed to target hair at the appropriate stage of its growth cycle.
This is why laser hair removal is normally carried out as a course rather than as one single appointment.
Your recommended treatment plan will depend on factors such as the treatment area, your hair and your individual response.
